A Guide to Attic Insulation

Installing attic insulation is usually straightforward but there are some thing we need to be aware of. Installing attic insulation correctly is very important. Incorrect or incompetent installation can make the insulating process much less effective, rendering the whole exercise somewhat pointless. While many issues can affect insulation, there are some basic errors which must always be avoided.

First, it is essential to make sure that no animals are nesting in the space which is to be insulated. If there is old insulation material in place, then some animals might decide to nest in it. All creatures need to be evicted from the space, and potential entry ways blocked. Always examine the attic thoroughly. New insulation can then be installed.

It is also a good idea to check for mildew, mould and rusty nails. These are all signs that the attic space has become damp in some way, usually due to a lack of adequate ventilation. If the insulation material becomes wet, then it is useless. Always replace any matted looking insulation material, and ensure that all vents are open and functioning correctly.

Although it might sound simplistic, wearing the right gear when installing is also important. Putting insulation in an attic or loft is a hot, often dusty job, carried out in a small space. Goggles and gloves are therefore essential, and it is also wise to wear loose-fitting clothing, which can keep you cool. Avoid installing insulation on blazing hot summer days too. Heat makes a worker stressed, and that is when mistakes are made.
